Christopher Francis Ocean (born Christopher "Lonny" Breaux; October 28, 1987), better known by his stage name Frank Ocean, is an American singer-songwriter from New Orleans, Louisiana. Ocean made an early career as a ghostwriter for artists such as Justin Bieber, Bridget Kelly, Brandy and John Legend. In 2010, he became a member of OFWGKTA. His debut mixtape released the following year, Nostalgia, Ultra, earned critical acclaim. He released two singles: "Novacane" and "Swim Good", which both achieved chart success. The mixtape gained the interest of recording artists such as Kanye West, Beyoncé Knowles and Jay-Z, and he consequently appeared on the Watch the Throne album.

In 2012, BBC announced that Ocean finished second place in its Sound of 2012 poll. Ocean appeared at Coachella and is scheduled to appear at Lollapalooza at the end of his 2012 summer tour. His debut studio album, Channel Orange, was released as a digital download exclusively on iTunes, one week ahead of its scheduled full release on July 17, 2012. Ocean was the first major hip-hop/R&B artist to announce that he had a same-sex relationship, when the industry is known for its heteronormativity.
